The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities across the country against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that such responsibility is not within their mandate.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, which paid him a courtesy visit at his office on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Aina said many candidates risk being misled because they often assume that any admission document issued by an institution is genuine simply because it carries the name of the university.
He explained that JAMB is the only body legally empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
According to him, universities that issue their own admission letters are acting outside their authority and must stop the practice.
The Registrar urged institutions involved in the act to ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents from JAMB after following the approved process.
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that all admissions into tertiary institutions must be conducted through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
Aina stated that any admission process carried out outside CAPS is illegal and invalid, adding that no institution is permitted to replace the official JAMB admission letter with its own document after a candidate has accepted admission on the platform.
He further explained that only admissions offered and processed through CAPS are recognised by the authorities and accepted for purposes such as mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other official engagements.
The JAMB Registrar urged universities to comply with the admission guidelines, stressing that the process was designed to protect candidates and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
