Borno police arrest 5 for wearing 'Tinubu Must Go' T-shirts in Maiduguri

Borno State Police Command has arrested five men for allegedly wearing T-shirts bearing the inscription, “Tinubu Must Go,” in Maiduguri.

The suspects were later arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court, where they were remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.

Police identified the suspects as Baba Aji Gremami, Mustapha Abba Yemen, Abbacha Mohammed Ali, Adam Umar Gubio and Abdulhamid Mohammed.

According to a First Information Report dated September 29, the five men allegedly conspired to print the T-shirts with the intention of causing a breach of public peace.

The police said the alleged incident took place around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri on September 25.

The suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery.

The police said the charges were filed under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.

A source also alleged that the arrests followed a directive from Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to the state Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, although there was no official confirmation of the claim.

Details of the court’s remand order and the next hearing date were not immediately available.

The arrests come as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The case is expected to attract public attention because it raises issues relating to public order, political expression and the enforcement of state laws.
The court is expected to continue hearing the matter as the prosecution presents evidence to support the charges against the five suspects.
