President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid an emotional tribute to elder statesman, diplomat and veteran journalist, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, saying Nigeria has lost one of its finest public servants whose legacy in journalism, diplomacy and national service will continue to inspire generations.
The President, in a statement on Saturday, described the late former ambassador as a man who devoted his entire life to serving the country with integrity, wisdom and uncommon dedication.
“I received with profound sadness the news of the passing of Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, a distinguished diplomat, journalist, politician, and public servant, who died at 86,” Tinubu said.
He said Dele Cole earned respect through decades of service, bringing honour to every office he held while contributing significantly to Nigeria’s political, diplomatic and media landscape.
President Tinubu particularly praised the late diplomat’s contribution to journalism during his time as Managing Director of the Daily Times, noting that he defended press freedom and upheld the media’s responsibility to hold leaders accountable.
“As Managing Director of the Daily Times, he upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power, and strengthening democratic governance. His legacy in journalism and public life remains an enduring part of our national story,” the President said.
Tinubu also commended Dele Cole’s diplomatic career, saying his efforts strengthened dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation while advancing Nigeria’s interests both at home and abroad.
The President noted that the late statesman lived through many defining moments in Nigeria’s history and remained committed to national development throughout his 86 years.
He said Dele Cole’s life was a shining example of principled leadership, experience and selfless service to the nation.
President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and associates of the late elder statesman.
“As we mourn his passing, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, professional associates and all whose lives he touched. I pray that memories of his remarkable life will bring them comfort and strength at this difficult time,” he said.
The President prayed for the peaceful repose of Dele Cole’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the painful loss.
