Obi honours late General Obiakor, demands better welfare for Nigeria’s military personnel

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for improved welfare for serving and retired military personnel, saying Nigeria’s heroes deserve more than words of tribute.

Obi made the call on Friday in Awka during a ceremony held to celebrate the life and legacy of retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor.

He described the late General Obiakor as a distinguished military officer and diplomat who served Nigeria with dedication both in the Nigerian Army and as a Military Adviser at the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

Obi said the late officer lived an exemplary life of service that should inspire future generations.

According to him, “The men and women of our Armed Forces, both serving and retired, deserve the highest honour and respect, not only in life but also in death. Political leaders should personally identify with and honour those who have dedicated their lives to defending our nation.”

The former Anambra State governor said the recent Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash and the subsequent helicopter incident highlighted the daily sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces in protecting the country.

He stressed that retired military personnel should receive their pensions promptly, have access to quality healthcare and enjoy decent living conditions.

Obi also said serving military personnel deserve adequate equipment, proper training and effective medical care to enable them carry out their duties successfully.

He added, “Those who defend our nation deserve a nation that protects their dignity and well-being.”

Obi prayed for the peaceful repose of the late General Obiakor, asked God to comfort his family and prayed for the safety and protection of all serving members of the Armed Forces.
