What began as a joyful welcome for Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat ended in tragedy after a 40-year-old man lost his life during an attack in Ibadan.
The Oyo State Police Command said suspected hoodlums attacked the group shortly after they left Molete for the Agidigbo office at Iwo Road, spokesman DSP Ayanlade Olayinka said.
The victim, Azeez Tajudeen, from Oke Amu in Otesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, suffered a severe injury to his right eye during the attack.
He was rushed to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where doctors confirmed him dead.
His body has been deposited in the hospital morgue.
The incident was reported to the police by Kehinde Samuel Ibikunle on October 14.
Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga has ordered the Command Monitoring Unit to take over the case for a thorough investigation.
The police said those behind the deadly attack would be identified and brought to justice.
The command also urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the police at least 48 hours before any procession or public gathering to allow proper security arrangements.
Police appealed to anyone with useful information about the attack to come forward and assist the investigation.
