The dream of becoming a doctor has moved a step closer for thousands of young Nigerians as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) inaugurated 13 new projects at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), Bauchi State.
The projects are expected to improve learning, medical research and healthcare training at the university.
TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, said the new facilities would help produce more doctors, nurses, pharmacists, biomedical scientists and other health professionals needed across Nigeria.
He said the projects reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to building world-class medical institutions and addressing the country’s shortage of healthcare workers.
Echono noted that FUHSA had recorded rapid growth since it was established in 2021 through strong planning and sustained investment.
He said the Federal Government created six specialised medical universities after the COVID-19 pandemic to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and prepare for future health emergencies.
According to him, TETFund has also approved the establishment of eight medical simulation centres across the country, with FUHSA among the beneficiaries.
He said work on the simulation centres is expected to begin in 2026, while installation of equipment is scheduled for 2027.
Echono praised the Bauchi State Government and the people of Azare for supporting the university’s development from its early days.
Vice-Chancellor of FUHSA, Prof. Bala Audu, said TETFund had remained the backbone of the university’s infrastructure development.
He described the newly completed Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences building as a major milestone, with lecture halls, laboratories, offices and modern learning facilities.
Audu, however, appealed for more intervention to expand the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences so the university can train even more healthcare professionals needed to serve Nigerians.
