Jonathan meets Sierra Leone President Bio in Freetown, discusses West Africa’s stability
Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with the President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, at the State House in Freetown, where both leaders discussed regional peace, democratic governance and cooperation within West Africa. Jonathan disclosed details of the visit in a post shared on his official X handle, explaining that he visited President Bio in his capacity as Special Envoy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and Chairman of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF). According to the former Nigerian leader, the engagement centred on issues affecting stability and development across the sub-region. “Today, I paid a special visit to His Excellency President @julius_maadabio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, at the State House in Freetown,” Jonathan stated. “I visited in my capacity as Special Envoy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and as Chairman of the W est African Elders Forum (@TheWAEF).” He further noted that both leaders exchanged views on matters of regional importance. “Our discussions focused on issues of mutual interest and matters relating to peace, stability, democratic governance, and regional cooperation within the West African sub-region,” he added. Jonathan also expressed appreciation to President Bio for the reception accorded to him during the visit. “I deeply appreciate President Bio for the warm reception, gracious hospitality, and conviviality extended to me during our fruitful engagements,” he said. The visit comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts by regional leaders and stakeholders to strengthen democratic institutions, peacebuilding initiatives and collective security across West Africa under the ECOWAS framework.

Pantami endorsed as sole PDP Governorship candidate
Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, has been officially affirmed as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Gombe State. Pantami emerged as the sole aspirant during the party’s affirmation process held on Tuesday. Chairman of the PDP Gombe Electoral Panel, Gregory Yenlong, announced the outcome, confirming Pantami received a total of 52,955 votes from across the state’s three senatorial districts: 16,781 in Gombe North, 12,752 in Gombe Central, and 23,422 in Gombe South. Speaking after his affirmation, Pantami said his move was motivated by the urgent need to combat widespread poverty and foster inclusive leadership in the state, not personal political ambition. He said, “This is not about ambition, but about serving humanity. It is not about Isa, but about Gombe State. There is no discrimination. We want our diversity to be our strength, not our weakness. “Gombe is the third poorest state in Nigeria with a poverty index of around 74.5 per cent. By implication, our people are living in abject poverty. “Our plan is to ensure we lift our people from this poverty, particularly through education and agriculture by introducing smart agriculture. In the area of industrialisation, we intend to attract foreign direct investment for our people.”
