Obi to Editors: “Scrutinise politicians, expose wrongdoings before elections
NDC Presidential candidate, Peter Obi

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian editors to remain committed to protecting democracy by ensuring accountability, transparency and responsible leadership in the country.

Obi made the call at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Enugu State, where media professionals gathered to discuss the role of journalism in strengthening democracy.

The conference, which had the theme, _“The Ballot, The Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,”_ focused on the importance of a credible media in promoting informed choices and safeguarding democratic values.

In a message shared on his X handle on Sunday, Obi described editors as important defenders of democracy, urging them to use their privileged position to demand better leadership from those seeking public office.

“I called on our editors to continue to reinforce their role as bulwarks protecting our democracy,” Obi said.

He encouraged editors to go beyond reporting political activities by carefully examining the records, qualifications and actions of those aspiring to lead the country.

According to him, the media has a responsibility to provide Nigerians with accurate information that will enable them to make informed decisions during elections and in choosing their leaders.

“Editors must continue to scrutinise the qualifications and past records of those seeking public office, expose past wrongdoings and ensure that the Nigerian people have access to the information they need to make informed decisions,” he said.

Obi also reminded political leaders that public office comes with a responsibility to uphold integrity and serve as examples to society.

“Leaders must exemplify the best values of society,” he added.

The former governor also used the opportunity to interact with participants during a question-and-answer session, where he listened to their views on the state of Nigeria’s democracy and the role of the media in strengthening public institutions.

He thanked the Nigerian Guild of Editors for inviting him to the conference, describing the gathering as an important platform for discussing how journalism can contribute to a stronger democracy.

Obi, who has consistently advocated for transparency, accountability and good governance, said a vibrant media remains essential in ensuring that citizens have the right information needed to hold leaders accountable.

Concluding his message, he expressed optimism about the country’s future, saying: “A New Nigeria is Possible, and Nigeria will be OK. -PO.”
