The life and legacy of one of Nigeria’s greatest literary icons, Emeritus Professor Olu Obafemi, will once again take centre stage as scholars gather to celebrate his lasting impact on education and society.
The Vice-Chancellor of Baze University, Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, will chair the 4th Annual Colloquium of the Federal University Lokoja in honour of the renowned playwright, poet and literary scholar.
The event will hold on November 11, 2026, at the university’s Multi-Purpose Hall in Lokoja as part of its convocation activities.
It is being organised by the university in collaboration with its Department of English and Literary Studies.
This year’s colloquium will examine the theme, “Creativity as Criticism in Olu Obafemi’s Works.”
The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, said the annual gathering is more than a ceremony because it keeps Professor Obafemi’s ideas alive for younger generations.
He said the respected scholar shaped his academic journey through years of mentorship and intellectual guidance.
Professor Ibileye explained that the colloquium was introduced in 2023 to ensure Professor Obafemi’s contributions continue to inspire research and public discussions.
According to him, literature remains a powerful tool for questioning injustice, promoting justice and inspiring positive change.
He said this year’s discussions will encourage scholars to see creativity as a force for social transformation.
The event will feature paper presentations from leading academics in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is expected as the Special Guest of Honour.
Several vice-chancellors, literary scholars, writers and education leaders will also attend the programme.
The colloquium will be held in both physical and virtual formats to allow wider participation.
Organisers believe the event will not only honour Professor Obafemi’s remarkable achievements but also inspire a new generation of Nigerians to use knowledge, creativity and literature to build a better society.
