Jordan Henderson turned back the clock with a brilliant two-goal performance as Chelsea hammered Bournemouth 5-1 on Saturday, earning the 36-year-old a place alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the English Premier League (EPL) record books.

Henderson gave Chelsea a dream start by scoring in the second minute at Stamford Bridge before adding his second in the 70th minute with a superb free-kick to complete an outstanding display.

Chelsea’s second goal came through an own goal by António Silva, while João Pedro scored twice in the 46th and 67th minutes. Bournemouth briefly threatened a comeback through Evanilson’s 51st-minute strike, but the Blues remained in complete control.

The brace made Henderson the oldest player to score twice in a Premier League match since Cristiano Ronaldo achieved the feat for Manchester United against Norwich City in April 2022 at the age of 37.

The performance was another reminder that Henderson still has plenty to offer at the highest level despite questions about his future in English football.

The former Liverpool captain left Anfield in 2023 to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq before returning to England with Brentford. His subsequent move to Chelsea was met with doubts over whether he could still perform consistently in the Premier League.

Saturday’s display provided a convincing answer.

Beyond his two goals, Henderson’s leadership and experience helped Chelsea dominate the contest, while his expertly taken free-kick capped a memorable afternoon for the veteran midfielder.

Chelsea’s emphatic victory was one of several dramatic results across the Premier League.

Arsenal came from behind to defeat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium after Riccardo Calafiori cancelled out James Justin’s opener before Bruno Guimarães scored the winner.

Brighton claimed a comfortable 2-0 away victory over Sunderland, while Ipswich Town produced a dramatic late comeback to beat Fulham 2-1 with stoppage-time goals from Abdoul Ouattara and Dara O’Shea.

Although there was plenty of excitement elsewhere, Henderson’s remarkable performance stole the headlines as he joined Cristiano Ronaldo in one of the Premier League’s rarest age-related scoring achievements.
